Singing Christmas carols together can be a fun way to connect with the whole family, including loved ones living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Most of us can remember at least one verse of “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night” but sometimes it’s a whole lot easier to have the words right in front of us.

Music is closely tied to memories. We know it, and research backs that up. Your loved one living with dementia may not be able to remember what they ate for breakfast, but they may still remember the words to many of their favorite songs. Still, having the words handy can make them feel even more comfortable and confident as they sing.

That’s why we display easy-to-read lyrics in our singalongs. We do this at our live in-person singalong shows and also in our online singalong videos. Our free online library of singalongs includes 20 Christmas singalong songs. You can select them individually, or enjoy them all together in our Christmas Singalong Show.

The videos are fun, but sometimes it’s best to get away from the screen. Your family may enjoy sitting around the living room or the dining room table singing songs. Or, you may want to go caroling together in your neighborhood. In that case, some printed lyrics can be handy. If your family is familiar with the songs, you may just need one person to have a copy of the printed lyrics. If one strong singer is leading confidently, people can often follow along fairly easily. On the other hand, sometimes it’s helpful for everyone to have their own copy of the words.
